Happy Birthday La Roux!

For all of you Americans out there who've never heard of La Roux, I'm not surprised. It's a two-person band stemming from UK. The singer (Elly Jackson) is a colourful singer from London who has taken Europe by storm. I learned about her in October 2009 when I was working on a European mobile company for work and we had to upload a bunch of her tour content on our site. In all the bits of her content (you can view that content here at my shameless self promotion) her two most famous songs were in the background.

Suddenly I found myself bopping my head and swaying my shoulders to her "In for the Kill" and "Bulletproof." Then... (while working in Sweden) I put her whole self-titled album on my Spotify playlist. (Spotify= "Pandora"+"iTunes") I started listening to her all the time. I then brought my new red-haired obsession back with me to the USA: La Roux was stuck with me.

I downloaded their music onto my iTunes and haven't stopped listening to her since January. {Lots of great gym/walk to work songs!} My new favourite songs from her are "Colourless Colour" and "Reflections are Protections." Now, this isn't a review of her music. I don't have the musical knowledge to give you that- by any means. But, I can tell you this: she has the similar-to-but-cheerful-Postal Service/80s video game/electropop vibe mixed with Depeche Mode down. And it's great. Better than great- showstopping. You really just have to listen to it yourself to find out what you're missing.

I just checked, and although they've soared to number 2 on the British UK charts, they've peaked at 170 on the US charts. Listen up! They're super great and I know that once they open for a big US artist (they opened for Lily Allen a few months back) or begin a huge fan base in the USA, they will hit it big over here.

Then again: maybe I want to keep them to myself? I do love her and her style and since I just found out that she turns 22 tomorrow, I also have a bit of a life-envy towards her. La Roux/Elly, if you read this- Happy 22nd Birthday, I adore you and hope to meet you someday. I think we could be great friends. :)

p.s. if any of you spotted the various words of this article that are spelled "ou" instead of just "o" it's because I was speaking the whole blog in my head in a British accent, so naturally had to spell it that way as well.

  1. YESSSSS I got hooked on them when "Bulletproof" was a free song on iTunes last year! Looks like that technique worked...

Not only do I have a soft spot for - as you so aptly put it - 80s video games, but also I really wish I was ballsy enough to rock a red faux hawk. Just sayin.
